This book came from writing the choose your own romance, The Perfect Wife, where Brynne’s first love comes back to Sydney as a decorated war hero, determined to win her back. The more I got to know Lieutenant
Colonel Edison Alexander, the more I wanted readers to choose him for Brynne’s happily ever after.
But, what if you didn’t!
In writing Ed’s character, I asked myself what makes him ready for love, now. The answer was that he was “emotionally single” for the first time since high school. Set free from the chains of first love nostalgia, Ed is ready to face the daunting world of single women.
Of course, there has to be a complication and it comes in the form of his commanding officer wanting Ed to “defend my daughter”. Just the assignment every soldier wants - not.
For Anastacia I drew on the strength of so many women who, in running away from a protective upbringing, in her case raised as an Army Brat, only find themselves with a man who wasn’t what they expected. Anastacia has fled her marriage, but Australia isn’t far enough to escape from her ex-husband’s influence. Anastacia is sassy, independent and proud. The last thing she wants is her father’s protection—or that of her father’s employee.
That sets up the emotional battle between Ed and Anastacia. Two, fiercely independent people who are fighting not only the threats to her life, but their attraction that can only enrage her father and distract Ed.
Set in Australia, I’ve tried to use American spelling and provide context around “mate”. Hint: slang for close friend. However, some names such as Sydney Harbour and Defence are spelt the Australian way. If there are terms or phrases that don’t translate into UK, USA, German – or even Kiwi - let me know!
This book is for Defence Brats the world over. Thank you for your sacrifice. I hope this honors you with the respect you deserve. My final dedication is for every woman who has suffered emotional, financial, and physical abuse from a person who she trusted.
