I love comfort foods. What about you? I cook most of my own food, and below is a list of top ten comfort foods I’ve made and enjoyed this year. They’re also popular with my family and friends, though we each have our favorites—one friend picks biscuits, my younger son loves mashed potatoes, while my older son chooses slow cooker turkey chili every time (he likes it with cornbread). My favorite is hot cocoa, though when I want it to be a really special treat, I make hot chocolate with whipped cream on top. Which would you pick?
9. Mashed potatoes
7. Chicken and Dumplings
5. Cinnamon raisin bread
4. Chocolate chip cookie skillet
1. Hot chocolate
I’ve linked to some favorite recipes for each, and below is a recipe I recently sent out in my newsletter (want to get it? Sign up here!) for Hugette’s Belgian Hot Chocolate, a decadent holiday treat. Hugette appears in my latest release, Paris Interlude, a sweet billionaire romance. Hugette is the hero’s former nursemaid, and, like me, she prefers being in her comfortable kitchen, feeding people. Hope you can enjoy some cozy times as this year ends. Happy holidays!
Hugette’s Belgian Hot Chocolate
1 cup/8oz whole milk
1 cup/8oz half and half
100g/3.5oz dark chocolate (70% or above, or use semisweet if you prefer)
21g/.74oz milk chocolate
Grate the chocolate (or chop fine). Heat milk in a small saucepan. Whisk in chocolate. Add half and half and heat, whisking to create a bit of froth. Serve with a cloud of whipped cream and a dusting of shaved chocolate. (Makes 2 cups)
