11 Soccer/Football Romances for the Season
Can't get enough of soccer? Sadly, World Cup 2018 ends this weekend: Saturday is Belgium vs. England for 3rd and 4th place, Sunday is France vs. Croatia for 1st and 2nd. There are plenty of highlights and memorable moments floating around the internet. Even if you're not a soccer fan, they're fun to watch as they give insight into our shared humanity of humor, elation, pride and defeat.
We've pulled a list together of highly-rated soccer-themed romances to tie you over until the next World Cup (Women's in 2019 and Men's in 2022). From sweet to sizzling, staring both men and women soccer players, there's something for most. If you have one to recommend, please drop it in the comments!!!
But before that, and especially for our US audience who may not 'get' the whole soccer scene, here's a little background.
What you need to know
Soccer, or football as the world-except-for-the-US calls it, is THE world sport. I've heard it called the great equalizer - no matter where you're from anybody can become a world renowned soccer star. No special equipment is needed, or access to expensive snow equipment or Olympic-size swimming pools. All you need is an open space to play (any field will do) and a ball (or something resembling one). Money doesn't matter, nor does the place you were born. What you need is talent, determination, and a bit of luck.
It's for this reason that every four years, millions and millions of people worldwide are enraptured during the World Cup. Fans see themselves in their favorite players and they get to live that childhood dream all over again.
Romance, aka soccer, is not just for men
The Women's World Cup is taking place next year in France. Since Women's World Cup soccer began in 1991, the United States team has placed either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in every final. Traditionally seen as a man's sport, things are changing, More nations than ever are stepping up and participating. After all, dreams are not just for boys.
