Love is in the air. In October, love smells a lot like pie. My boyfriend and I have just returned from a trip to the local orchard and the unmistakable aroma of apples and cinnamon follows me from room to room. Cider donuts taunt us from the kitchen table, daring us not to gobble them up before breakfast. Taffy apples sit in their box, a sweet treat for after dinner. On the stove, two pots boil away happily, one full of stew, the other filled with hot, spiced cider.
For those of you unaccustomed to the thrill of a Midwestern day at the orchard, I’ll share the recipe for this simple joy:
Optional: Whisk in a corn maze, a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, face painting, live music, and/or hayrack rides
This has been a recipe for family fun since I was little and my parents would pack us into the car. Octobers smelled of sweet apples, smokey bonfires, and the savory goodness of homemade soup. In my family, the holiday season started long before Thanksgiving. Love and reflection were part of October days with their growing chill. Everyone was welcomed as family to share in a hot meal and a steaming mug of cider.
Mom would kill me if I shared her secret soup or chili recipes, but here’s how to make a cup of spiced cider that will warm up any October day and is perfect to share the whole holiday season.
I hope you enjoy every bit of this lovely month we call October. May your cider be sweet, your cups always full, and your home the center of love.
