Hi! To start off, please tell us your name, where you’re from, and what you write.
My name is Nicole Highland, and I'm a romance author from Fort Wayne, Indiana. I write contemporary, new adult, paranormal, and (most recently) fantasy romances!
How did you become an author? Please share a bit of your journey with us.
Well, I've always loved writing. Even when I was a kid, I loved to create stories, and I've always had an overactive imagination. I'm perpetually stuck with my head in the clouds. Last year I went through some very difficult events in my personal life, and I decided to write my first novel, Sweetest Release, as a way of coping with my depression and giving me an outlet to express myself.
Oh, wow. So writing is a very personal thing for you, right?
It is! It's helped me tremendously in processing my grief and anxiety.
What are you working on now? Do you have a recent or upcoming release?
Currently, I am working on a fantasy romance series. I haven't set a date yet for release, but I am super excited about these books. Writing fantasy is a new undertaking for me. I released two shorter stories back in July. The first, Diving Right In, is a fun, summery beach romance set in the fictional town of Crescent Key (inspired by Siesta Key, Florida) and the second book, Business, and Pleasure, is a short, steamy office romance between a very creative heroine, and a math-loving accountant.
What kind of research do you do when you set out to write a new book?
I don't usually do a lot of research prior to starting, but Google is quite handy when I have little random questions pop in my head when I'm writing! I've had to research car repair issues, treating concussions, and the differences between interior designers and interior decorators, just to name a few. I never know what rabbit hole I'll go down when I write.
Have you ever researched something that would raise some eyebrows?
Not yet, but you never know what questions a future work-in-progress might hold! ;)
What/who do you like to read and do you have a favorite genre/author?
I almost exclusively read romance, though sometimes something else will catch my eye. Usually, if I'm not reading romance, I'm reading nonfiction. I don't know if I have a single favorite, but Alessandra Torre, Jill Shalvis, and Debbie Macomber are some of my faves.
Please share one piece of advice to aspiring authors - what do you wish someone would have told you? Or, what did someone tell you that you’d like to pass on to others?
This isn't something anyone necessarily told me, but I would say be prepared to work extremely hard. Writing isn't easy. I could give a lot of advice--mostly because I have no shortage of opinions--but I can sum it up in a few basic ideas. Stay humble. Write your story the way YOU want to. (What a boring world this would be if we all stayed within boundaries!) Be supportive to your fellow writers. Don't tell someone they can't or shouldn't do something, because everyone's voice matters equally.
Alpha, beta, or both? I like a good beta hero.
Cowboy boots, biker boots, or flip-flops? Flip-flops for sure!
Leather, lace, or silk? Lace.
Cake, cookies, or crumpets? Cookies!
Top, bottom, or against the wall? All of the above! ;)
Cats, dogs, or exotics? Cats
Any parting words before we say goodbye?
I just want to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to discuss myself, and a thank you to all my past readers and future ones!
