Hi! To start off, please tell us your name, where you’re from, and what you write.
Laura M. Baird, I grew up in Florida, lived in Georgia, Massachusetts, Idaho, and now Washington State. I write contemporary romance.
How did you become an author? Please share a bit of your journey with us.
I wanted to emulate Nora Roberts! J I started writing in 1995, set it aside to put myself through dental hygiene school, then started again off and on around 2005. It wasn’t until I attended my first writer’s conference in October of 2016 that I said – “This is it! I’m going to be an author!” I polished stories, submitted, and got my first acceptance five months later.
What are you working on now? Do you have a recent or upcoming release?
As I write this, I’m bouncing between two stories and hope to have them completed by the time this interview goes live! I’m working on book 3 of my Shifter Clans, about a wolf and fox shifter. I’m also working on a short romance, my first attempt at a fantasy time-travel.
What kind of research do you do when you set out to write a new book?
The majority of my research is done online (probably not unlike many in today’s world). It really depends on what I’m writing, where my story is taking place. I’ll research locations, points of interest, any cultural aspects or interesting facts. I like to include ‘local flavor’ in a story, meaning I’ll include real restaurants from an area, or a hospital, or an organization to give it authenticity. And maybe a reader will say, “Oh, hey, Laura mentioned this in her story!”
What/who do you like to read and do you have a favorite genre/author?
I of course read anything romance, whether it’s contemporary, paranormal, suspenseful, humorous! As for a favorite author, there are too many to list, but my top favorites are Nora Roberts, Donna Grant, Laura Kaye, Rachel Grant, Toni Anderson, Darynda Jones… I could go on for pages! ;)
Please tell us your favorite holiday and why.
I’ve always loved Thanksgiving. Getting family together to simply hang out, eat great food, and watch football!
Please share one piece of advice to aspiring authors - what do you wish someone would have told you? Or, what did someone tell you that you’d like to pass on to others?
Simply write what you love, it’ll reflect your passion. Don’t write for what’s popular or what someone else tells you to write, because readers are extremely diverse, and your audience is out there!
