Don’t you just love a good romance story…especially a second chance romance that promises a rosy future for the central characters, and leaves you with a warm, fuzzy feeling?
We’re not meant to spend our lives alone. Sadly, relationship breakups are not uncommon. When a couple has an opportunity for a second chance, we’re drawn into their journey towards a happy-ever-after. Will they put in the effort to maintain this new relationship? Have they learned from past experience and will they get it right the second time around? A love story about a second chance romance between a couple who shouldn’t have parted in the first place, or with someone new who’s recovering from a previous breakup, is a healing balm for our hearts.
One of my favorite second chance romance movies is Sweet Home Alabama. Definitely a go-to feel-good movie. Melanie and Jake were destined to be together, though it took them a while to realize they were meant to be life partners. The stakes are high. Would they ruin their one and only chance to make their happy-ever-after a reality?
The heroes and heroines of our romance novels or movies will find love, even if the journey to their happy-ever-after takes them along a rocky path. There’s always that question of how, or if, they will get over the next hurdle in their developing relationship. This tension is what draws us to read romance.
A common theme in my stories is Second Chance Romance, whether enemies to lovers or friends to lovers. In The Trouble with Natalie, the age difference between my hero and heroine is 12 years. He and her younger brother were childhood friends. Luke comes back into Natalie’s life as a gorgeous sexy man with a bright future. She happens to be his boss. A relationship with him will jeopardize her career. In December Heat Wave, my two main characters had met before, very briefly, when the heroine took a distinct dislike to the hero, or so he thought. When they meet years later, the path remains rocky on their journey to happy-ever-after.
I like writing romances where the hero and heroine meet for the first time and mutual attraction becomes something more, as in No Boundaries. Both my hero and heroine have been unlucky in love. Now their emerging relationship is complicated by their teenage children.
Everyone deserves a second chance for romance and love. For me, second chance romance stories nourish the heart.
